We always like a challenge: when asked by a client, can we provide a mezzanine floor within four weeks from design to supply and installation? We thought why not!

Our client required a 65 square metre mezzanine floor with a 4.8 kn/m2 load capacity and additional staircase.

The floor had to be the same height as an existing staircase to gain building regulations approval which required 2 means of escape.

With a proposal on the clients desk within two hours an order was placed by the end of the day.

Many mezzanine floor manufacturers struggle with demand in January after the Christmas shut down, we were lucky that our mezzanine floor manufacturer was able to work us into the schedule. Within three weeks we had a 65 square metre industrial mezzanine floor delivered to Washington, near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in North East England and installers ready to get stuck in the same morning.

With work already booked in our installers had limited time to complete this project, they estimated if completed within the day, they would not cause any delays in other projects.

In the end it took six hours!

The client was over the moon, the mezzanine floor was designed, supplied and installed a week ahead a schedule and at a very competitive price.

Look what we built last week.....

This is a double skin steel partitioning system with an industrial exposed grid suspended ceiling which we installed for a client in the North East of England. Our specification was to provide a enclosure with an office and storage area to provide a safe working area for stock checks.

In an industrial factory atmosphere double skin steel partitions are the most suitable solution as the provide reinforced protection from heavy or fast moving stock and machinery and are also very easy to demount and replace if any damage should occur.

We installed this project using our own highly experienced installers, the project was completed to the 'Mezz-Rack Standard' on schedule and to budget.

A recent project involved a call from a manufacturer in Sunderland, 10 miles from our base in central Newcastle-Upon-Tyne with the request for an industrial steel enclosure with a suitable suspended ceiling, ideal for a factory environment.

We supplied a double skin steel partition and exposed grid suspended ceiling to match client requirement.

Double Skin Steel Partitions are ideal for creating enclosures within industrial areas used by heavy or fast moving equipment. A double steel skin ensures additional protection from potential damage and injury and can be supplied with soundproofing and fire rating if needed.

Drive In Pallet Racking

With many different types of pallet racking system available on the market it can be difficult deciding which system is right for you. Here is a little background on how a Drive In Pallet Racking System works, but don’t worry, you can always rely on our pallet racking consultants who provide a full explanation on site and a proposals based on your requirements.

A Drive In Pallet Racking System utilises 60-80% more warehouse space than a standard adjustable pallet racking system, by removing the need for feed corridors. Ideal if you have a large number of pallets that need storing in a small warehouse area.

Drive In Pallet Racking is designed for pallets which are slow moving or have a long storage history where accessibility is not an important factor. Such as in cold stores or where products are transported in batches.

Drive In Racking is a L.I.F.O system which stands for Last In First Out, this means the first pallets added to the racking go right to the back, these cannot be accessed until the front pallets have been removed.removed.

Taking an example of a recent drive in racking project we have installed in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. A 1000 pallet location racking system, split into three blocks.

You can see by looking at the pictures that uniformity is essential, each rack is individually levelled and lined up to make sure the entire system is level.

Each row of racking consists of support bars connected to the rack which the pallets sit on, these bars are designed to take specific sized pallets of a certain weight. Pallets are stacked from the bottom up, first the ground floor pallet up to the top followed by the next row.

To utilise the warehouse efficiently, each aisle is a little larger than the pallet size, as a result guide rail is installed to ensure the fork lift or reach truck does not touch the racking system and potentially damage it. In this instance the 8mm thick right angle guiderail was notched around the racking system to fully maximise the space.

This particular client needed to store items which are transported in batches. We felt Drive In Racking was the perfect pallet racking system to use and the system was very satisfied with our proposal.

Office Suspended Ceilings and fit outs in the North East on the up – Mezz-Rack Systems Ltd.

Since moving from our offices in rural Northumberland to central Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in Tyne and Wear we have seen a sturdy increase of trade in the office ‘fit-out’ part of our business. Although times are hard and we may be pushing towards a double dip recession, we have seen nothing but positivity in the eyes off our clients, looking to recapture lost space in their warehouses and storage areas.

We have been hectic supplying free quotations then sourcing and installing suspended ceilings and office partitioning, not just in Newcastle Upon Tyne but all over the North East including Durham, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Northumberland. Without trying to blow our own trumpet this can’t just be because of our highly competitive prices and very comprehensive service.

Some of our recent suspended ceilings are only 10 to 20 square metres others are 200 square metres, but any way you can look at it, it is nothing but positive. It’s not the largest companies in the North east region either, we are busy working with small and medium sized companies who are focussing on consolidating what they have, using wasted storage or office space to create, kitchen or toilet facilities or meeting rooms and waiting areas. If trade is quieting down our clients are making the most of it and focusing all their attention on attracting what buyers there are left at the minute.

By installing our fully demountable and reusable partitioning systems and suspended ceilings we are providing a major selling point for our clients to their customers, times are hard but they are making it through and so are we.

Unirack Shelving in Leeds

You may of read one of our previous blogs about a 26,000 box archive storage system we fitted in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, this is a very large project. We also do smaller projects.

We were approached by the same client to fill a small storage room with archive racking.

The parameters included:

Supply and install 400mm deep shelving.
Supply and install 800mm deep shelving (same linear meters storage with less components).

Our excepted specification included:

29 bays of Unirack shelving at 2000mm high, 1500mm wide and 400mm deep with 5 steel shelf heights and a load capacity of 205 kgs per shelf.
3 bays at 2000mm high, 1800mm wide and 400mm deep and a load capacity of 140 kgs per shelf.

The frames were supplied with mesh sides to prevent boxes slipping into adjacent shelves.

It only took a couple of hours to install the system and the client was very happy with the finished product.

Industrial Partitioning in Scotland

Perfect use for Industrial Partitioning

Mezz-Rack systems was approached by a company in Galashiels, Scotland to supply and install a sealed enclosure around a section of machinery in their warehouse.

Our proposal was based on the following parameters:

Supply and install double skin steel enclosure
All Joints sealed to prevent dust from escaping
All top caps intumescent sealed
Glazed where required

Following these requirements we provided a specification for 4500 mm wide by 4900 mm high double skin steel partition, with a 1000 mm glazed partition at 1200 mm from the ground.

The project consisted of 2 runs at 6500mm long partitioning and 1 run of 5500 partition with a set of bi-parting sliding doors for access.

Once built we sealed all joints with silicon to prevent dust escaping into the rest of the warehouse.

A Wheelie Good Mezzanine

Mezz-Rack Systems Ltd were approached by a wheel chair manufactures in London to design, supply and install a mezzanine floor and office partitioning systems.

Taking into account the clients requirements we designed a 61 sq metre mezzanine floor with a 4.8 kn/m2 load capacity. In order to match building regulations requirements we installed a 30 minute fire rated 20 sq metre armstrong suspended ceiling, 60 minute galvanised column cladding and 12 metres of 30 minute fire protected fascia, we also installed insulation above an existing office ceiling to ensure the floor was fully fire protected.

We then installed partitioning above the mezzanine for the office space and a suspended ceiling to finish it off. Our experienced and highly trained electricians fitted the electrics, smoke detection, alarms and lighting for both floors.

The client was very happy with the job.

Rolled Edge Mezzanine In Gloucestershire

Our brief was to design, supply and install a mezzanine structure that is stable, rigid, structurally sound and suitable for use in the food industry.

With the clients consent we designed a mezzanine system with rolled hollow section beams and perlins.

Our design is for a 30 metre by 11 metre floor with a 4.1 metre finished floor height with a 10 kn/m2 load capacity suitable for storage and the use of a hand pallet truck.

We have provided rolled hollow section beams and perlins for this mezzanine floor to ensure that no loose materials settle into any grooves or over hanging areas. This will remove any possible infestation issues.

Once the structure is finished we will be installing a 6mm steel plate for the finished flooring.

The finished floor will be ready for use in the next few days and we will post more information then.

At Mezz-Rack Systems we have over thirty years’ experience in the racking and storage industry, we specialise in rack safety inspections. As our usual trade in designing and installing racking and mezzanine flooring slows down, we have the opportunity to focus on one of our most satisfactory jobs.

Racking Safety should be a priority in all warehouse and industrial facilities, but with Christmas round the corner and the retail industry working at full steam the possibility for accidents is a lot more likely.

Basic rack safety doesn’t just consist of load bearing signs and beam clips. In our eyes rack safety includes taking all the preventative measures possible to ensure the safety of operators and the protection of stock.

There’s a good chance that you have seen the fork lift accident videos on YouTube or Top Gear, all it takes is to clip a heavy loaded upright with a forklift and the entire load comes down. If that warehouse manager knew about the cost effective measures available it could have been avoided.

Mezz-Rack Systems can provide column barriers that drastically reduce the chances of damaging an upright, we can also provide end of rack barriers to offer all round rack protection.

Mezz-Rack Systems undertake a thorough investigation of your racking systems, and provide a detailed report of damaged uprights, bracing, beams, loose foot-plates, etc., including drawings with damage location is issued along with our recommendations and damage replacement list. Once you know your racking is safe it can be protected against future damage.

We have a number of national accounts with clients ranging from one warehouse facility to others up to 25 buildings of which these checks are normally made every 6 months, with our retail clients we ensure we make checks before the hectic Christmas period. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

It is important to note that rack safety inspections are recommended under the P.U.W.E.R regulations but are NOT a legal requirement. However we generally feel that an inexpensive rack Inspections and advice on further protection is a very worthwhile cost and as we are ISO:9001 accredited you can rest assured we are totally committed to offering a quality service.

We recently fitted this pallet racking system in Liverpool. It has column guards and end of rack barriers to offer full protection from fork lift damage in the tight aisles.

Although it is unlikely the skilled drivers will hit them it is always safer to have column protection, just in case!
